Wisconsin resident Sabrina Elizabeth has opened up a Womb Wellness Center that offers vaginal steaming. We sit down with Sabrina to learn more about how she came to offer this service.
What is your profession?
I am an Ayurvedic Practitioner and Vaginal Steam Facilitator
Where did you go to school or get your professional training?
I studied Ayurveda through the New World Ayurveda School and became a Vaginal Steam Facilitator through the PeriSteam Hydrotherapy Institute.
What led you to this type of work?
Ever since I can remember, my cycles have been irregular and my periods have been debilitatingly painful. Because of this, I did what I knew at the time and searched for help through my doctor. The solution that I was given was the birth control pill which ended up causing a lot of health issues for me, I believe, including difficulty conceiving later on. As I learned about natural ways to regulate and improve my menstrual cycle through diet, herbs, etc, I experienced a deep feeling of anger. I felt so angry that the only thing my doctor had to offer me was medication, when there are so many gentle and holistic life-improving methods of healing. Deeper than that, I felt angry knowing that there are so many girls and women who have the same story as myself, the same lack of holistic support. This propelled me to study ways to help women heal naturally and holistically to support women with alternative options.
How long have you been practicing?
I have been Practicing Ayurveda for two years and Vaginal Steaming for almost six months.
How did you learn about vaginal steaming?
Wanting to learn more about my own cycles as well as ways to help women with their healing journeys led me to begin reading the book “Moon Time” by Lucy Pearce. In this book Lucy shares a small paragraph of information about Vaginal Steaming. I read it, thought “huh”, and forgot all about it until a year later! Suddenly, out of nowhere, I remembered the term “Vaginal Steaming” and simply could not get it out of my head for WEEKS. Now I know that this had to be Divine Guidance and my intuition!
Before looking for more information, I decided to ask my Somali (East African) Momma if she had ever heard of it being practiced back home. Sure enough, my Mom remembered that it was used in Somalia. Knowing this inspired me to learn more, so I prayed for guidance and for a teacher that could teach me about vaginal steaming. A few days later I was looking through the Magamama Podcast for an episode to listen to while I folded laundry and I came across the episode where Kimberly Johnson interviews the beautiful Keli Garza on the topic of… you guessed it, vaginal steaming!! As I listened to the podcast I fell in love with everything that Keli explained and was so happy to learn that she offers classes online. From there, my Mother and I both decided to become Vaginal Steam Facilitators!
Do you use vaginal steaming yourself?
Yes! I use steaming very often for myself, before and after my period.
What has your personal experience with steaming been?
It has been a beautiful experience for me. I grew up feeling very shy and honestly quite disconnected from my body, especially the places that I didn’t understand and that were private such as my yoni and breasts. Vaginal steaming has not only helped me with my cycle but has surprisingly helped me to feel much more connected and aware within my own body.
Why did you decide to offer this service to women?
I wanted to offer this service to women because it is such a gentle and effective way to help women reclaim their power and their confidence in self-healing. Ever since I heard about Vaginal Steaming it just felt so incredibly right to me to the point that I couldn’t sleep at night from how excited I was to learn more.
How long have you been offering vaginal steam services?
I have been offering vaginal steam services for six months.
Where do you offer your services?
My Parents and I opened a wellness center called Fitra Wellness Center, in Janesville WI. We offer a variety of holistic wellness services such as health coaching, Ayurvedic and Herbal consultations, Raw Food Preparation, Cupping, Women’s Health Consultations, and we have a special private little room dedicated to Vaginal Steaming!
What benefits do vaginal steam services have for your clients?
Each client seems to experience different benefits; most express being able to finally relax in a way that they have not been able to relax before, a new and pleasant connection to their womb space, and a much more pleasant menstrual cycle.
How do clients respond when you offer them vaginal steam services? Any funny stories?
Offering someone a Vaginal Steam session always seems to be a funny experience, as most women have never heard about it before! Recently, I began explaining to a client that I believed that Vaginal Steaming could be beneficial for her menstrual difficulties and her initial response was “ uhhhmm.. Is there any other option?” I couldn’t help but smile and tell her that she didn’t have to steam if she didn’t want to. It turned out that she really enjoyed her steam session and even took herbs home to begin her steam plan at home!
Any favorite quotes from clients either during or after steaming?
“That felt great and so relaxing, I struggled to keep myself from falling asleep!”
Do any vaginal steam success stories stand out where the client had a significant health breakthrough?
Yes, I had one client who had a missing period for 3-4 months. After setting intentions to release and realign with herself, she steamed for three days in a row and got her period that week! I nearly cried knowing that such a simple healing method was able to bring her such relief!
