We interviewed Dr. Bean to learn more.
What is your profession?
I am a Doctor of Acupuncture and Asian Medicine. I also am an author, speaker and an acupuncture steam therapist.
Where did you go to school or get your professional training?
I went to New York College of Health Professions and then I attended the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine. I also received my acupuncture steam therapist certification through the Peristeam Hydrotherapy Institute.
How long have you been practicing?
I’ve been practicing for 15+ years as an acupuncturist.
How did you learn about vaginal steaming?
I actually learned about vaginal steaming through my patients. I heard about it and decided to look into it myself.
Do you use vaginal steaming yourself? What has your personal experience with steaming been?
Yes! Steaming for me has been very relaxing. I had some irregular discharge clear out after the treatment and my yoni felt healthier. I also found that steaming has been helpful in cleansing the lower digestive tract.
Why did you decide to offer this service to women?
I decided to offer this service to women because it just made sense to have a more localized form of treatment to address the womb where there can be so many issues for women. It makes sense because I knew of the use of moxa, a downy substance obtained from the dried leaves of an Asian plant related to mugwort. It is burned on or near the skin in Eastern medicine as a counter-irritant in this area. Vaginal steaming is more a “yin” approach which also makes sense.
How long have you been offering vaginal steam services?
I’ve been offering vaginal steam services since November 2018.
Where do you offer your services?
I offer vaginal steam services in my office located in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, New York.
What benefits do vaginal steam services have for your clients?
My clients have reported deeper relaxation and healthier periods, starting closer to 28 days, less clots, less cramps, and overall healthier wombs.
How do clients respond when you offer them vaginal steam services? Any funny stories?
My older patients seemed shocked that such a vulnerable part of them could be addressed directly outside of the privacy of their home. One said, “What??!! You do that here??!!” I then told her how this is a customary part of some cultures, where it could even be done in groups. I also offer patients the option of steaming at home if preferred.
Any favorite quotes from clients either during or after steaming?
“Wow!!! This was so relaxing!!!”
