In 2019, researchers from the Department of Public Health in The Netherlands and Suriname published a study exploring whether or not vaginal steam users have a higher rate of chlamydia infection than non-steam users. They surveyed 1040 participants in Suriname and found that the steam-users did not have a higher rate of chlamydia.
[Keli Garza note – the authors did not comment on if steam-users have a lower rate of infections although I think it is very likely. It’s important to know that the authors of this study were trying to show that steaming is harmful for pH balance and healthy vaginal flora and would, therefore result in higher infection rates. This study actually proves the opposite – that vaginal steaming does not cause infections.]
