In 2022, researchers from Amsterdam UMC Department of Obstetrics published a study exploring whether or not vaginal steam users have a higher rate of miscarriage.Â
They found that steam users do not have a higher rate of miscarriage. [Keli Garza note – the authors did not comment on if steam-users have a lower rate of miscarriages although I think it is very likely. It’s important to know that the authors of this study were trying to show that steaming is harmful for the vaginal microbiome and would, therefore result in a higher miscarriage rate. This study actually proves the opposite – that vaginal steaming does not harm healthy flora. It would be interesting to see them study the vaginal microbiome directly – taking swabs before and after steaming, for example. There is only one such study I’m aware of that did something like this (see Validation of the Effect of An Ayurvedic Therapeutic Procedure, Dashmoolkwath&Dhoopan – Fumigation with Medicinal Herbs During First Week of Puerperium: An Open Clinical Trial). The results show no disruption to the vaginal flora and a better pH temperature than the non-steam group.]
