Description
Designed by a midwife and woodworker married couple duo 30+ years ago, the “Iota” birthing stool has seen thousands of births across Canada, the US and Europe. With blessings, we’ve been handed the torch to carry it forward.
Our heirloom-quality, hand-crafted stools have taken the original template of the Iota stool and integrated some modifications to make it our own. Recognizing that historically steam seats and birthing stools were one and the same and passed down from generation to generation, we’ve crafted ours with this purpose in mind. Consider the ancestral wisdom shared through the stool, from woman to woman down through the generations! This was how womb wisdom survived through the ages and continues to today.
We offer 4 Canadian hardwood types – walnut, maple, cherry or ash – and finish each stool with the beauty and high quality of Odie’s non-toxic finishing products to nurture naturally and bring out the radiance of these heartfelt species.
Stools are built to order and can be made with legs that are attached, or ones that are removable. Finger grooves are on the underside to support gripping when used while birthing.
Dimensions are 19.5” in width, 13.5” in depth (front to back), and can be made with legs that will result in 2 sizes: 10” or 12” from floor to top of the seat. There is also an option to order both sets of legs (removable leg stools only).
We maintain a conscious awareness of our connection to all of life, and ensure sustainable forestry practices are followed. Our studio buzzes with eco-conscious approaches from completely non-toxic professional finishes, recyclable packaging for shipping, zero wood waste, and heartfelt intention in our approach.
We hand-craft all aspects of our seats: from the wood that’s cut by people we know directly who follow sustainable forestry practices; to the natural air-drying process that ensures no dies or chemicals are used (as is the case with 95% of commercial lumber); to the milling process we do ourselves in-house; to careful wood selection and pattern matching; to the hand-turning of the legs on our lathe; to the hand sanding and applied oils and waxes. We do it all and take heartfelt pride in the quality we offer.
